The stampede to buy Powerball lottery tickets is underway. Typically when the prize is small ($20 million is small?) about 30 million tickets are sold. Now the prize has reached $222 million the sales are predicted to rise to 100 million tickets. This must delight the organizers who changed the rules to increase the chances of bigger jackpots in January 2009.
It is an interesting comment on what turns us on. The prospect of winning $200 million plus attracts three times as many people as the prospect of winning $20 million. Like $20 million, not worth the effort of buying a ticket.
